REELFOOT RALLY
GADSDEN, AL REGION 6 AIRSTREAM PARKING
BUSINESS MEETING ELECTING OFFICERS FOR 2014
The September Rally held at Wall Doxey State Park in Holly Springs, Mississippi turned out to be a real success. The food was fantastic (as expected from Brian and Sue hosting) and the weather was just like fall. The Memphis unit has been to this park many times and it one of our favorites. The date for the rally is picked to coordinates with the Hummingbird Festival held just north of Holly Springs. The festival is a fun and interesting event where you can learn all about the life and migration of hummingbirds.
September is also the date that we begin to collect dues for 2014. International dues are $65 and the Unit dues are $10, for a total of $75. Our new members that joined during 2013 do not owe dues for 2014.
Carnegie Hall Wannabes
In June of this year these four airstreamers spent a week at Steve Kaufman’s Flatpicking Kamp at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee. Not that we played in the real Carnegie Hall but we did do a lot of jamming in our dorm by that name. From Left to right is Stan Patterson (Alabama Unit, Madison Alabama), Ken Harrell (Alabama Unit, Birmingham), Tom Bolander (Memphis Unit, Fayetteville, TN) and Bobby Taylor (Nashville Music City Unit, Nashville, Tennessee). We love our music and our Airstream campers but during this trip the campers had to stay at home.
Guinness Book of World Records
You have probably heard of The Airstream Galax Fiddlers’ Convention Special Event Rally at Galax, Virginia. Well this year the Organizers of the “Largest Mandolin Ensemble” say they set a world record on Tuesday August 7, 2012. Officials say they had enough people playing the mandolin at once (389) to break the current world record of 383 mandolin players set in Germany in July 2005. Four old Bluegrass tunes were played that could be heard all over town. The number of mandolin players and the world record for Tuesday’s event still has to be confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records. One of our members from the Memphis Unit was there.
